When it comes to purchasing windows and doors there are many to choose from which can make deciding a difficult and arduous task. It’s not just a case of settling for your standard white UPVC. To help with this choice, below is a comprehensive list of windows and doors that are available so that you can make an informed decision.

Window Styles

Casement windows are hinged on one side and open away from the house. These are a very popular option because their design ensures that as much light as possible enters the property.

Tilt and turn windows come in a clever design because they open from side and from top. These are great for those who households that have children because they can be opened a fraction, which is just enough to let in air but it also means that children are unable to climb out of them. Also, from a cleaning perspective, as they open from the top they are simple to clean.

Georgian windows have horizontal and vertical bars that are situated across the pane and it is very similar to windows seen in Georgian homes. They have a classic design but have the ability to fit in with traditional homes.

Sash windows are another style of classic window and they open slightly differently as the frame is lifted vertically as opposed to outwards. Whilst sash windows are a great feature on older homes they are now becoming popular on modern homes because they do not require any extra space when they are open.

Door Styles

French doors are known to come as a pair of glazed doors and they are hinged at both sides which means that they meet in the middle. With both doors open, they are perfect for accessing gardens and conservatories as well as patios.

Sliding doors are different to French doors simply because one door slides over the other as opposed to opening outwards. These doors are also known as patio doors.

Another common style of door is Bi-Folding doors because they allow the homeowner to really maximise the space when they are open. The panels are split into two and are joined by hinges and also known as Concertina Doors.

Front doors also come in a number of styles such as rustic, fiberglass, contemporary and craftsman styles. There is something for everyone and they can be designed to let in as much light as you wish. Side panels can help to increase light whilst also providing a feature. The possibilities are endless when it comes to front doors.

Frame Materials

UPVC stands for Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride is one of the most common types of materials used in double glazing frames. They are simple to keep clean and they look good but are also reasonably prices. It is durable and hard wearing but works for both doors and windows. They come in a number of different finishes such as photo-finish wood effect colours.

Steel frames are extremely strong and lightweight but also slimmer, however, it is common for a thermal break to be added to the frame in order to combat the problem of heat loss.

Wood was once the common material used in windows and it is still popular. It is a brilliant insulator but they do require more maintenance than other frames, but if you have wood on in other places on the exterior of your home then having frames that match makes a huge difference.

Composite frames consist of more than one material and they commonly have wood on the inside of the frame with powder coated aluminium on the exterior. Composite Windows are a fantastic option as you get the feel of hardwood on the inside and yet they are virtually maintenance free on the outside. The perfect combination.

Having a number of options when it comes to doors and windows gives homeowners the opportunity to find something that really works for them. All homes are different which means that one style of window or door will not suit every home which is why they are many different styles to choose from.
